We hope our visit will be a real celebration of the vibrant diversity which defines modern Canada, from her ancient traditions to the world-class brilliance of her contemporary culture. We are particularly looking forward to meeting as many Canadians as possible as we travel from coast to coast, covering twelve cities in almost as many days. I could not be more proud of the Canadian organizations of which I have the great pleasure to be Royal Patron and which have been working with great success for many years to help young people into work; to protect our environment and our heritage; and to promote ever closer co-operation between the public, private and N.G.O. sectors.
My wife and I will be spending a great deal of time with the Military and, in particular, with the Regiments of which I have had the privilege to be Colonel in Chief for many years. We would like to pay tribute to their outstanding service not just to Canada, but to the entire international community. When I present new Colours I shall be thinking not only of the proud histories of my Regiments, but of the courage and sacrifice of the present generation and, crucially, of all the loved ones who provide such devoted support to them. It is, I think, fitting that our visit encompasses all three elements of Her Majesty’s Canadian Forces and ends on Remembrance Day, when my wife and I will share with all Canadians two minutes of silent reflection and reverence.
